Obituary

William B. "Curley" Veersma, age 89 of Morley, passed away Friday, September 12, 2014 at his home. He was born January 28, 1925 in Lansing the son of Henry and Mildred (Cadwell) Veersma. Curley grew up in Morley until being called to serve, along with his three brothers, during World War II. He served in the United States Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater. Following his honorable discharge, Curley went to Grand Rapids where he established "Curley's Auto Parts and Sales". He later met and married Karen Henderson and continued to run his business and raise his family in Grand Rapids, until retiring to Morley in 1980. In 1982 Curley and his son Curt started "Curley's Auto Sales" in Rogers Heights, eventually building a new location south of Big Rapids. Curley loved everything about the car business; he liked his colleagues, he enjoyed attending car auctions; he never lost interest in the business. He took great pleasure in going to Florida, he had gone every year since 1947 and during his retirement spent many winters there. He was a member of the Morley American Legion. Curley loved his entire family dearly; but he had a special love and place in his heart for his grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Karen Veersma; his daughter, Debbie (Charlie) Miller of Middleville; his son Curt (Laura) Veersma of Stanwood; four grandchildren, Nick Bauman, Kayla Katsma, Allie Veersma, Lindsey Veersma; two sisters, Helen Nyenhuis of Hudsonville, Micky Dykhouse of Grand Rapids and many nieces and nephews. Curley was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Arnold, Robert and Howard. Funeral services will take place 12:00 p.m. (noon) Monday, September 15, 2014 at the Northland United Methodist Church in Stanwood with Pastor Gary Bondarenko officiating. The family will greet friends on Sunday, September 14th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Burial, with military honors, will be at the Aetna Township Cemetery in Morley. Memorial contributions in Curley's name may be given to his family or the Salvation Army.
