William Vern "Bill" Swix, age 100 of Houghton Lake, formerly of Lansing, passed away Sunday, December 15, 2013 at his home. He was born March 24, 1913 in Shelby, Michigan the son of Philetus Bert and Hazel (Riegle) Swix. He spent most of his childhood in Shepherd and then moved to Lansing. Bill worked at Oldsmobile; he butchered at various markets, including Gorman's; he worked as a custodian for the Lansing School District and he ran the miniature train at Potter Park Zoo. Bill married Norma Smith on September 21, 1967. They lived in Lansing until moving to Houghton Lake in 1981 where Bill took part-time employment selling vegetables. He spent most of his time fishing, deer hunting and berry picking. Bill and Norma processed deer in their spare time and liked to bowl together, a sport Bill had enjoyed his entire adult life. Bill Swix will be remembered for his quick wit, his ability to tell a good joke and especially the love he had for his family. He is survived by his wife Norma Swix of Houghton Lake; three children, William A. (Carolyn) Swix of Stanton, Gordon L. (Connie) Swix of Lansing, Vicki L.(Sidney "Skip" ) Loudenslager of Lake Odessa, eight grandchildren, Stephen (Christine Daggett) Swix, Terri (Bill) Fowler, Douglas (Julie) Swix, Diane (Kevin Roche) Berry, Susan Widener, Scott (Kim) Swix, Burten Loudenslager, Robin VonEitzen; 13 great-grandchildren, Amy (Joe) Peters, Angela Swix, Stephen Swix, Allen (Cindy) Fowler, Erik Fowler, Grant Swix, Meagan Swix, India Berry, Amber (Jeff) Linn, Zackary Swix, Joshua Swix, Stoane Loudenslager, Zachary Loudenslager; one great-great-granddaughter, Rachel Peters; a sister, Louise Ulrich of Cadillac and many nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert Swix, half-brother, Richard Ryckman, half- sister, Janet Cook and a grandson, John Swix.
