William Dean "Bill" Olendorf, age 80 of Big Rapids, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2018 at his home. His story begins on March 31, 1938 in Hart, Michigan where he was born to Jasper and Martha (Vande Buntie) Olendorf. After graduating from high school, Bill went to college at Ferris State University where he also played basketball. He earned his teaching degree and eventually took a job teaching at Big Rapids Public Schools. Shortly after, Bill met Bonnie Ruth Brissette who became his wife on August 18, 1962. This was the start of their wonderful 56 year journey. On August 28, 1963 Bill and Bonnies first child, Roger, was born. Cheri, their second blessing, was born on May 29, 1967. Bill continued teaching for over 40 years. He also spent his summers working in the cherry industry. When Bill retired, he and Bonnie became the youngest couple in a retirement community in Zephyr Hills, Florida where he immediately became a central part of the park. Bill was even planning on going again this year, until succumbing to cancer, however reluctantly. After all, he was never one to give up without a fight. And he did put up one heck of a fight, always a warrior. Bill was a proud supporter of the local sports teams. He would often be seen at football games, basketball games, baseball games and wrestling matches for Ferris State University and Big Rapids Public Schools. He was so incredibly proud of all their successes. Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years Bonnie Ruth Olendorf of Big Rapids, Roger (son) and Laurie Olendorf of Reed City, Cheri (daughter) and Todd Csernai of Big Rapids. He is also survived by grandchildren; Seth Schaner of Pagosa Springs, Co; Garrett and Elisha Schaner of Nashville, TN; Matt Fisher of Las Vegas, NV; Sarah Olendorf of Alma, MI; Katie Olendorf of Big Rapids, MI; Kara Csernai of Big Rapids, MI; and Leah Csernai of Rhode Island. He is also survived by his great grandson Colton. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert Olendorf. Bill will be greatly missed by the many who knew and loved him. A memorial service will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2019 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Big Rapids with Pastor Jonathan Williams officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service Saturday at the Church. Memorial contributions may be made in Williams name to the family to begin a scholarship at the Big Rapids Public School in his name.
