William H. "Bill" Obert, age 91 of Big Rapids, passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at his home. He was born May 10, 1923 in Grand Rapids, the son of Edgar E. and Blanche T. (Cook) Obert. Bill was honorably discharged from the United States Army after serving during World War II. He was a member of the Big Rapids Free Methodist Church. Bill was employed by Wood Archery of Big Rapids. He later began his career as a furniture maker at the Pine Shop in Big Rapids where he worked until his retirement. Bill enjoyed the outdoors; hunting, fishing, boating and his yard work. He liked watching hobby stock racing and attending auctions. Bill is survived by his wife, Betty Obert of Big Rapids; two daughters, JoAnne (Dave) Ladwig of IL and Billie (Hank) Jung of WA; two step-sons, Leonard (Cindy) Lach of Stanwood and Lawrence Matzen of Morley; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Dewitt (Sharon) Obert of Big Rapids; two sisters, Nina Eldred of VA and Hazel (Glen) Marvel of Big Rapids; two sisters-in-law, Adeline Obert and Joan Obert both of Big Rapids; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gerald, Norm and James Obert; and sister, Betty Hanes. A memorial service will take place at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the Mecosta County Township Hall (19729 - 11 Mile Road, Big Rapids). Memorial contributions may be made in Bill's name to Spectrum Health Hospice. Envelopes may be picked up at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home.
