William F. Cornell, age 86, Barryton, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2013. He was born January 9, 1927 in Sheridan Twp., Mecosta Co., MI the son of Burt and Agnes (Nicholson) Cornell. Bill graduated from Barryton Rural Agricultural High School in 1945 and enjoyed basketball and baseball in his younger years. The week after graduation Bill enlisted into the United States Army where he was a military policeman in Germany during WWII. Following his tour of duty he came home to marry the love of his life Verna Cummings on June 7, 1947, at the Cummings family farm on 19 Mile Road. in Barryton. Bill was a lifelong farmer and active in the Barryton community coaching Little League Baseball to a championship, volunteering on the Barryton Fair Board, Tractor Pullers, Barryton Co-Op Board and the Farm Bureau Board. He was a former Fork Twp. Trustee and Supervisor and former President of the Mecosta Co. Park & Transportation Board. He was employed for 20 years at Holly Carburetor in Clare where he was a supervisor and past Union president. Bill was baptized on August 11, 2011 at the Barryton Church of Christ. He was loyal to his family and friends and had a cheerful smile. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Verna of Barryton; one son, Jerry (Rhonda) Cornell of Clio; two daughters, Susanne (David) Smith of Durand, Tina (Bill) Henry of Wildwood, IL; son-in-law, Jack Stickler of Big Rapids; daughter-in-law Jane Cornell of Remus; one sister, Bonnie Eckstein of Barryton; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by a son Dennis Cornell, a daughter Jenine Stickler, a grandson Trent Cornell, a brother Wayne Cornell, a sister Betty Cassabaum and his parents. Services will be 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Barryton Church of God with Pastor Gary Bryan officiating. The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 20th at the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton.
