Obituary

Willard "Wynne" Nellis, age 90 of Chippewa Lake, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2009. He was born October 28, 1918 in Fork Township, Mecosta County to Charles and Helen (Wynne) Nellis. Wynne was a 1937 graduate of Fork Township High School in Barryton. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1945. He served during World War II in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters and was awarded 4 bronze battle stars. Wynne returned from the service and worked at J. C. Waddell's in Big Rapids as an auto mechanic. During that same time, Wynne owned and operated a dairy farm at Chippewa Lake that is still in operation today. He also delivered bottle gas to area customers for 50 years and assisted Dr. Blake (a local veterinarian) for many years. On the farm, Wynne had a "Sugar Bush" operation that produced maple syrup every spring. He was an active member of his community and had served as a Chippewa Township Trustee for over 25 years. Wynne was a devoted member of the Chippewa Lake Community Church. He is survived by 2 sons, Timothy (Cheryl) Nellis and Patrick Nellis all of Chippewa Lake; a daughter. Joan (Carl) Boroff of Big Rapids; 6 grandchildren, Joshua (fiance, Krystle Downs) Nellis of Canadian Lakes, Jonathon (Jill) Nellis of Rodney, Bridget (fianc, Kyle Brigham) Nellis of Lansing, Ashley Nellis of Chippewa Lake, Carla (Dan) Estes of Comstock Park, Brent (Koylynn) Boroff of Sparta; 7 great-grandchildren; A brother, Louis Nellis of Barryton; a sister-in-law, Myrna Nellis of Rodney and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Wynne was preceded in death in 1996 by his wife, Helen Cox Nellis whom he married in 1954, an infant son, Thomas in 1958 and 8 brothers and sisters. Funeral services will take place 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 10th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Stephen Scott officiating. Military honors will be under the auspices of the American Legion Post #98 Firing Squad. Spring interment will be at Chippewa Lake Cemetery. The family will greet friends today (Monday) at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Tuesday. Memorial contributions in Wynne's name may be given to the Chippewa Lake Community Church Building Fund.
