Wayne Edgar "Red" Gilbert, age 91 of Barryton, passed away at his home on Sunday, September 23, 2012 with his family at his side. Wayne was born on March 11, 1921 to Wade and Erma (Knox) Gilbert in Fork Township, Mecosta County, Michigan where he has resided his entire life. Wayne graduated from Fork Township Rural Agricultural High School in 1939. He was active in sports and was named to the Mecosta County Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. Wayne helped win state championships in baseball, basketball and bowling. He had the motto "If you win you don't have to be a poor looser." Wayne was a member of the Odd Fellows and Lions Club in Barryton and a former Boy Scout leader. Wayne married Ruth A. Plumton on March 9, 1945 in Barryton and they made their home and raised their family on the Gilbert farm. He grew up on the farm and raised cattle into his 70s. Wayne drove school bus for Barryton Schools and the transition through Chippewa Hills, retiring after 37 years. Wayne and Ruth also enjoyed wintering in New Port Richey, Florida for 27 years. Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Ruth, one daughter Leanna (Michael) Smith of Pinckney; daughter-in-law Pam (Ken Ford) Gilbert, who have been aiding in Red's care for the past several months; two grandchildren; Ryan Gilbert of Troy, New York and Lesley McCarthy of Ferndale, Michigan; one sister Yvonne Branson of Barryton; three nieces and two nephews. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents Wade and Erma, a son James Gilbert on Oct. 3, 1992 and one sister Leota Nelson. The family will greet friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton. Funeral services for Wayne will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27 at the funeral home with Pastor Vic Charnley officiating. Interment will follow at Flake Cemetery in Barryton. In lieu of flower, memorial donations in Wayne's name can be made to the Chippewa Hills Orchestral Society or Hospice of Michigan.
