Obituary

Walter B. Mattson, age 93 of Hersey, passed away Friday, March 2, 2012. He was born February 19, 1919 in South Range, MI the son of Matt and Lisi (Immonen) Mattson. On July 6, 1939, Walter enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps "CCC" and worked at Camp Paulding in the Upper Peninsula. He later enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. Walter married Irene Herrala and they lived in several areas of Michigan including the U.P., Detroit and Muskegon, where Walter retired from Continental Motors. Most recently Walter had made his home in Hersey with his current wife, Betty Mae and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Reed City. He is survived by his wife Betty Mae Mattson of Big Rapids; four sons, Chuck (Paula) Mattson of Park Forest, IL, Brian (Dee) Mattson of Gwinn, Stan (Pennie) Mattson of Tustin, Steve (Brenda) Mattson of Norton Shores; sister-in-law, Dorothy (John) Kiiskila of Hancock; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene (Herrala) Mattson in 1985 and four brothers. Memorial contributions in Walter's name may be made to the Mecosta County Commission on Aging "" Meals on Wheels. Envelopes may be obtained at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids where arrangements were made. No public services have been scheduled at this time.
