Vernon F. Steinke, age 83 of Chippewa Lake, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2010.He was born November 22, 1926 in Morley the son of Fred and Edith (Baker) Steinke. Following High School graduation, Vernon enlisted in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged after serving during World War II and the Korean War. He was a graduate of Central Michigan University earning a Bachelors of Science Degree. Vernon worked for Michigan Consolidated Gas Company, retiring after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Big Rapids. Vernon loved golfing and fishing. He is survived by his loving wife, Wanda Steinke of Chippewa Lake; a son, Scott Steinke of Arizona; 2 grandchildren, Megan and Roland Steinke; 3 step-children, Gale (Barb) Rodarmer of Lakeview, Linda (Mike) Perks of Stanton, Karen (Bruce) Thiel of Reed City; 12 Step-grandchildren; 20 Step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by an infant grandson, a step-son, Michael, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. A memorial service will take place 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 29, 2010 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Big Rapids with Pastor Matt Deames officiating. Memorial contributions in Vernon's name may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Michigan.
