Vernon Care, age 94 of Big Rapids, passed away Monday, February 3, 2014 at Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital. He was born June 12, 1919 in Erie, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Mary (Colley) Care. Vernon married Margaret Dailey Hansen on March 4, 1940 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Big Rapids, where they raised their family. He joined the United States Army National Guard and was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant after serving for 26 years. During this time, Vernon worked for the Michigan State Police, on the family farm and as a home builder. He was a local casket maker and salesman for John Care and Son, which is now known as Care Caskets. Vernon was still actively working when he passed. He was a member of the Big Rapids American Legion Post #98 and the Police Officers Association of Michigan. Vernon enjoyed spending time with his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by three daughters, Norma Elton of Florida, Louise (Dennis) Byrnes of Big Rapids and Bev Care of Florida; 7 grandchildren, Dannette Garcia and Juan, Tony Elton, Brad (Tammy) Elton, Randy Elton, Denise (Jim) Moore, Eric (Andrea) Schneider and Mike (Tamara) Care; 23 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; a nephew, Everett (Rose) Care. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 50 years, Margaret on November 23, 1989; a foster son, Ron Ruth; two grandsons, Paul and Jim; a brother, Everett Care. A graveside service will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Big Rapids.
