Velma F. Wernette, age 96 of Zephyrhills, Florida, formerly of Remus, passed away Sunday, November 22, 2009. She was born June 9, 1913 in Mecosta County the daughter of Edward and Myrtie (Sears) Jarrett. As a 16 year old girl Velma went to live with Vern and Linda Crittenden where she cared for their children and was considered a member of the family. On November 21, 1932 Velma married Gaylord C. Wernette at St. Michaels Church in Remus where Velma was a devout member for many years. They made their home in Remus and Velma worked for Tasker's Pharmacy and later at the Remus Co-op Creamery as a butter wrapper. Following Gaylord's retirement the couple moved to Zephyrhills, Florida where they lived for over 40 years. Velma is survived by many loving nieces and nephews especially Chuck and Sharon Wernette of Canadian Lakes; 3 sisters-in-law, Mary Grace Baldwin of South Carolina, Mildred Stratton of Grand Rapids, Bonnie Wernette of Greenville and her devoted friend and caregiver, Wilma Ray of Zephyrhills, Fl. Besides her parents, Velma was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gaylord on May 16, 2000, an infant daughter and 2 brothers, Harold "Hap" Jarrett and Nolan "Sam" Jarrett. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 25th at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Remus with Father Michael Burt officiating. The family will greet friends this evening (Tuesday) at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be at St. Michaels Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Velma's name may be made to St. Michaels Catholic Church in Remus.
