Obituary

Torrence "Ted" A. Hanford, age 93, of Barryton, Michigan passed away on August 4, 2011 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids. He was born on December 3, 1917 in Rochester, New York. When Ted was 5 months old he was taken into the loving home of Richard and Amela Mae Hanford. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy following World War II. On November 18, 1942 Ted married Madeline Connick in Bryon, OH. They made their home in the Lansing area where Ted retired as Superintendent for the Federal Motor Vehicle Service in Lansing and had previously worked at the Lansing Post Office. Ted and Madeline enjoyed traveling throughout the country and overseas. He was a lifelong member of the American Motorcycle Association, Lansing Motorcycle Club, V.F.W. Post #701 in Lansing and Mulliken Masonic Lodge 412. Ted was a former Boy Scout leader, handy at wood working, was instrumental in the starting two tractor clubs, restored several tractors and worked on many tractors for his neighbors. Ted was the beloved husband of 68 years to Madeline who resides in Barryton and wonderful father of Patty (Denver) Heffron of Big Rapids and Phil (Sandy) Hanford of Big Rapids. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Jan (Mike) Moody of Big Rapids, April (Larry) Matthews of Colorado, Matthew (Dana) Harshbarger of Virginia, Terry Lynn (Neal) Platt of Texas, John Hanford of Pensacola, FL, Jeff Hanford of San Francisco, CA; fours sons (from a previous marriage), Lloyd Pratt, Patrick O'Donnell, Michael O'Donnell and Kirt Hanford; 14 great grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Ted appreciated the care given to him by Kristy, Nora, Jennifer, Diane, Elly and his nurse Tina. He was preceded in death by his parents and foster sister Louetta Galvin. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7th at the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 8th at the funeral home with visitation one hour prior. Interment will be at Brown Cemetery in Barryton. Memorial donations in Ted's name can be made to the Humane Society ASPCA (424 East 92nd St., New York, NY 10128) or the VFW Boys Home (3573 S. Waverly Rd., Eaton Rapids 48827).
