Obituary

Thelma Meeker, age 91 of Barryton, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012 in Mt. Pleasant. She was born August 2, 1920 to Leonard and Florence (Foster) Simmons in Mt. Pleasant. The family moved to Remus about 6 months later where she grew up & went to school. After finishing high school she completed a short business course at Ferris Institute. During the WWII years Thelma taught commercial subjects at Sherman Twp. Rural Agricultural School (Weidman) under a War Emergency Certificate. Thelma attended and supported the Faith United Methodist Church, was a life member of the Michigan Order of Eastern Star and past Worthy Matron of Atlanta (MI) Chapter 487, had over 20 years with the Barryton Rebekah Lodge and was past Noble Grand. On August 20, 1939 Thelma married Wayne D. Meeker and to this union 3 children were born who survive her: Joyce (Allen) Switzer of Weidman, Linda (Michael) Ehr of Barryton and John (Lynn) Meeker of Barryton. She is also survived by 3 sisters, Nola Wernette of Farmington Hills, Betty Lamb of Grand Rapids and Lois (Ronald) Doerr of Mt. Pleasant; sisters-in-law: Edna (Robert) Carpenter of Big Rapids, Ilene Meeker of Remus, Norma Meeker of Remus, Jeanette Ross of Portage, Joan (Don) Mentzer of Lake Orion, Devern (Pat) Meeker of Goshen, IN & Richard (Diane) Meeker of Mecosta; 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne in 1986, her parents, a sister Donna Wernette, a brother William H. Simmons and an infant brother Leonard. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 31st at the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton with Pastor Joe Beavan officiating. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 30th at the funeral home. Memorial donations in Thelma's name can be made to the Barryton Library, Faith United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
