Obituary

Thane D. Stout, age 84 of Stanwood, passed away Monday, March 21, 2016. He was born May 22, 1931 in Stanwood the son of George and Frances (Wiltse) Stout. Thane graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1949 and attended Ferris State University earning an associates degree in refrigeration. In 1951, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1955. Thane returned to Mecosta County and took a job in the oil fields. In 1956, he returned to FSU to further his education, earning an additional degree in Radio and TV repair. Thane married Ruth Arndt on April 18, 1958 in Big Rapids and together they made their home in Stanwood. Thane owned and operated a cherry orchard in Stanwood from 1958 thru 1963 and also drove bus for the Morley Stanwood School district. He also owned and operated Stout Sales and Service in Stanwood, selling and repairing televisions and radios for ten years. For over 32 years, he worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal service, retiring in 1993. He was an active member of the Stanwood community; serving as the Stanwood Village Treasurer for 29 years, serving on the Board of the Stanwood Hospital and he was a member of the Stanwood Lions Club and the V.F.W. As a devout member of the Northland United Methodist Church of Stanwood, Thane served as their treasurer, as an usher for many years and was a member of the Mens Club. Thane is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Ruth now residing at Royal View Retirement Community; three children, Jacquelyn (Clarke) Macy of Saline, Cynthia (Donald) Force of Howard City, Kathryn (Michael) Lake of Stanwood; five grandchildren, Christopher Macy, Clayton (Shannon) Macy, Amy Force, Stacy (Eric) Sours, Andrew Lake; two great grandchildren, Kayla and Pierce; two brothers, Phillip (Joan) Stout of Kalkaska, Terry (Mary) Walker of Florida; aunt, Marjorie Stout of Stanwood and several nieces and nephews. Thane was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Edward Walker.Funeral services will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 26th at the Northland United Methodist Church in Stanwood with Pastor Gary Bondarenko officiating. Burial will follow at the Stanwood Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of the United States Navy. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 25th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids and one hour prior to services at the Church on Saturday.Memorial contributions in Thanes name may be made to the Northland United Methodist Church in Stanwood.
