Obituary

Terry Kenyon Stevens age 72 of Midwest City, Okla., formerly of Big Rapids and Rogers Heights, passed away July 27, 2017, at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center from complications in his battle with cancer. His wife, Linda, and family were by his side as he gently slipped away. Terry was born at the Community Hospital in Big Rapids on May 22, 1945, to Virginia (Coe) Stevens and Phillip Allen Stevens. Terry was preceded in death by his daughter, Mia Stocking and his parents, Virginia (Coe) Stevens and Phillip Allen Stevens. Surviving along with his wife, Linda, are his son, Boyd Stevens (Lisa), of Midwest City, Okla,; his sisters, Linda (Robert) Eden, of Liberty Township, Ohio, Penny (Barry) Botruff, of Cook, Minn., Pam (Randy) Hoerauf, of Shelby Township, and Tina (Brian) Misner, of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother, Bill Stevens (Linda), of Niles; half-sister, Melody Boyer (Nick Vandenbelt), of Reed City; four grandchildren, Antoinette (Jeremy) Marlow, of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Andrew Stevens (Candie), of Austin, Ark., Amber Kagley and Lauren Stocking, of Midwest City, Okla.; plus seven great-grand-children. Terry and Linda dated while going to Big Rapids High School and married after graduation on July 11, 1963. He married Linda Miller at St. Andrews Episcopal Church of Big Rapids and they made their home in Big Rapids. That year Terry entered the Army and became a fixed wing mechanic. He was stationed at Fort Rucker, Ala., and Echterdingen Army Airfield, Germany. He was honorably discharged in August 1966 and returned to Big Rapids. While in high school he worked for Burt Myers Excavation in Big Rapids; after the service he entered into his lifetime career of power line construction beginning with Hydaker-Wheatlake Company and moving on to other power line companies that took him to many states. He was a loyal member of the IBEW Local No. 876 and worked on new lines and reconstruction from local and out-of-state jobs and often chased storm damage. The last storm he worked on was restoring power after Hurricane Katrina and also Hurricane Rita that hit the southern United States in 2005. He lived in huge tents and damaged motels for two-and-one-half months while working 16-hour days. He retired a few years later to his hobbies; he enjoyed wood-working and most of all his knife building. Terry made knife blades from old saw blades and the handles from recovered woods or antlers. He loved trout fishing in small streams for brook trout. He also fished off his pontoon boat just outside his home in Rogers Heights. He especially liked catching and eating catfish. He was a long-time member of the American Legion Post No. 98 Honor Guard, something he was very proud to be a part of until his move to Oklahoma. He also was a lifetime member of the AMVETS Post No. 1941. He loved to cook from scratch, making ravioli, potato pancakes and many other family favorites. Terry and Linda loved packing up their fifth wheel and heading to Wheatland and Blissfest Music Festivals to enjoy bluegrass and other traditional music. The Buckley Old Engine Show was their favorite camping place, where they enjoyed camping by friends and riding around in their vintage garden tractor and cart. In early 2017 they moved to Midwest City, Okla., to be closer to family. They purchased a home across the street from their son, Boyd, and his family. Terry enjoyed life and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He made new friends wherever he worked or traveled. His wonderful smile and laugh will be greatly missed. He leaves an unfillable hole in all our lives. A memorial service will take place 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with military honors under the auspices of Big Rapids American Legion Post 98 Honor Guard and the United States Army. Memorial Service Wednesday, October 18, 2017 11:00 AM Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home 13985 Northland Drive Big Rapids,MI 49307
