Terrill "Terry" K. Swier, age 77, passed away Sunday, December 5th, 2021 at the Royal View Retirement Community in Mecosta. She was born March 18th, 1944 in Carson City, MI, the daughter of Peter and Leatrice (Leiter) Britten. Terry graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1962 and later attended Ferris State University where she was one of the first women in the computer science program. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Suny Empire State College in New York and a Master of Information and Library Science from University of Michigan-Flint.
She met Gary Swier in 1968 and they were married in October of 1969. They made their home in the Grand Rapids area where Terry was employed by Kentwood School District as an elementary school Librarian. Later, Terry and her family moved to Spain, Rochester, New York, and Davison, Michigan. Following retirement, Terry and Gary were delighted to settle at Horsehead Lake in Mecosta, Michigan. She was an active member in various organizations throughout Mecosta County. Two of note, Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation (MCWC) where Terry was one of the founding members and the Mecosta County Library where Terry volunteered and raised money for library renovations. Terry also traveled extensively throughout the United States supporting water conservation efforts even testifying in front of Congress.
Terry is survived by her two sisters Susan Lovell, Candace "Candy" (Scott) Smith, her brother Patrick (Diane) Britten, two sons, Paul (Rachel) Swier of St. Louis, Missouri, and Chris (Kate) Swier of Remus; five grandchildren, Maddie, Amelia, Jacob, Allma and Ila; also surviving are several nieces, nephews and extended family. Terry was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Dick Borstler, her second husband Gary Swier and brother Michael Britten.
There will be a Memorial Visitation with the family greeting friends on Saturday, December 11, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with an Informal Time of Sharing beginning at 5:30 pm. Please wear a mask.
The family requests memorial contributions in Terrys name be made to a favorite charity of the donors choice.
