Obituary

Robert "Ted" Patterson, 79, of Stanwood, passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2025. He was born on October 8, 1945, to Theodore James and Harriet (Tibbs) Patterson in South Bend, Indiana. Ted's legacy of passion for teaching, coaching, and community service left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

A 1963 graduate of Niles High School, Ted was an exceptional athlete, earning recognition as an all-state football player. His athletic talent earned him a scholarship to Central Michigan University, where he met his lifelong love, Cheryl Oosterbaan. The two were united in marriage on August 20, 1966, and together, they shared a life full of love, adventure, and commitment.

Ted devoted over 32 years of his life to teaching at Chippewa Hills High School, where he made a profound impact on students both in and outside the classroom. As a teacher, coach, and mentor, Ted helped shape generations of students, always striving to bring out the best in each one. He was the driving force behind starting and building the school's wrestling program, which he coached for many years. Ted also coached football and track, building lasting relationships with his students and encouraging them to push their limits both on and off the field. He was also Senior Class sponsor and actively participated in various student activities, further enriching the lives of those around him.

Ted's love for his family and community was reflected in everything he did. He proudly supported his children and grandchildren as they excelled in athletics, always ready to lend a hand and cheer them on. He found joy in hunting, fishing, and spending time with his best friends, creating cherished memories along the way. Ted was known for his warmth, kindness, and sense of humor, and he built many lifelong friendships throughout his community.

Ted is survived by his wife, Cheryl Patterson; children, Theodore Robert "Teddy" (Donna) Patterson and Terry Lee (Al) Wenzel; grandchildren, T.J. (Kylie), Jordan (Skylar), and Kylee; siblings, Mary Jo Myer, Jim Patterson, Margaret (John) Cinninger, and Martha (Bill) Kennedy. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Timothy Donald Patterson; brother, Thomas Patterson; and brother-in-law, Bob Myer; and sister in-law: Sarah Patterson.
