Sue A. Shaltry, age 76 of Big Rapids, passed away Monday, March 27, 2023, at her home with her family by her side. She was born in Muskegon on December 26, 1946, the daughter of James and Lotta (Braun) Percy. Sue was a 1965 graduate from Muskegon High School and attended Muskegon Community College. She married John Shaltry on April 18, 1970, in Muskegon and together they raised their children in Big Rapids. Sue continued her education at Central Michigan University, where she was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, earning her Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education. She was able to spread her knowledge at different schools throughout her years, including: Trinity Lutheran School, Ferris State University, Mecosta Osceola Intermediate School District, and St. Mary Catholic School, where she retired in 2005. Sue also taught at the Isabella County Jail for several years. She was an active member of St. Mary St. Paul Catholic Community in Big Rapids; she was involved in Catechism Classes, PCCW, and Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. Sue enjoyed sewing, reading, cooking, baking, and working in her flower garden. She had a kind heart and looked forward to helping young people reach their goals. Sue was well loved and left a legacy to be cherished by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of nearly 53 years, John Shaltry of Big Rapids; two daughters, Marie (Jeff) Cousineau of Hersey and Coleen Shaltry of Big Rapids; two grandsons, Evan VanSteeland and Max Grezeszak; sister-in-law, Anna Percy of Muskegon; and many nieces and nephews who will fondly remember their aunt. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, four siblings Dianne (Walt) Matheny, Michael Percy, Patricia Jurges, Thomas Percy, and son-in-law Daniel Grezeszak. Mass of the Resurrection will take place at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 31, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Big Rapids with Father Jegar Fickel officiating. The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 30th at Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with a Rosary being prayed at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to Mass Friday at Church. Sue will be laid to rest at Mount Carmel Cemetery in the Spring. A special Thank You goes out to Hospice of Michigan for all of their great help in caring for Sue these last months.
