Stephen J. Pell, age 67 of Mecosta, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, December 14, 2017 at his home. He was born September 24, 1950 in Grand Rapids, the son of James and Norma (Bergsma) Pell. Stephen graduated from Lee High School in Wyoming in 1968. He earned an associates degree in Criminal Justice from Grand Rapids Community College. Stephen was employed by the United States Postal Service retiring in 2008. He was one of the friendliest and caring men you would ever meet; he would give you the shirt off his back. Stephen always had a smile on his face and liked to joke. He was a lifelong Cubs fan and enjoyed walking his dogs on his property. Stephen loved his grandchildren and family, he will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of nearly 18 years, Sue Pell of Mecosta; five children, Stephanie (Michael) Schut of Hudsonville, James (Tracey) Pell of Grand Rapids, Shana Mayer of New Haven, Melissa (Eric) Denslow of Mecosta, and Michael (Kassie) Lewis of Blanchard; twelve grandchildren, Brendon, Reese, Livy, Shawn, Jada, Brody, Maks, Gabriel, Tyler, Jace, Lauryn, and Emery; sister, Carol Bowden of Wyoming; several nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Barbara Langell of Chippewa Lake, and brother-in-law, Jim (Patty) Langell of Big Rapids. Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, James Langell. A memorial services will take place 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 21, 2017 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Stephens name to the Mel Trotter Ministries.
