Stella Golfis, age 102 of Barryton, passed away Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Altercare of Big Rapids. She was born November 16, 1915 in Oshkosh, the daughter of John and Anna (Szyrikoviak) Marciniak. Stella was raised in Wisconsin and later moved to Detroit where she met and married George Konstantine Golfis in Royal Township on February 22, 1936. Stella and George had two children Ann and Gust that they raised in Madison Heights. In 2003 Stella moved to Barryton from St. Helen where she enjoyed the quietness and abundance of nature. Stella "Morning Star" was of Cherokee decent and celebrated her Native American culture by teaching her children dances, history, songs and stories. She felt honored to lead the Women's Traditional Dance at the Baraga powwows and continued dancing until her health declined last year. At 101, Stella was the oldest dancer in Michigan and traveled throughout the U.S. attending powwows with her son Gus and was featured in several news articles and publications in Michigan. Stella's life was not easy growing up during the depression and this taught her to be frugal and thankful for what she had. Stella is survived by her devoted and beloved son, Gust George "Limbo" Golfis of Barryton, who will always cherish his mothers memory and spirit. Stella is now reunited with her husband, George Konstantine Golfis who passed away in 1969; her daughter, Ann (James) Gray; an infant grandson, Gust George Golfis Jr. and one sister, Cecilia Bygrove. A memorial celebration will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at the Barryton Community Building, 3265 20 Mile Rd. with Pastor Darwin Mowat officiating.Memorial contributions may be made in Stella's name to the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton to take care of funeral costs.
