Starr Diane (Kent) Freiberg, age 82, of Big Rapids passed away on June 1, 2021, after a short battle with cancer. Starr was a wife, mother, sister, and friend to all. In all things, she was a caretaker; providing care to anyone whenever needed. She was a very hard worker, generous, and a little feisty at times. Starr had a passion for country and gospel music, especially Ernest Tubbs. She was a 1956 graduate of Godwin Heights High School where she played French horn and lettered in the band. She was the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow in her senior year and Big Rapids Homemaker of the Year in 1971. Starrs career was in nursing at the Mecosta County General Hospital and Munson Home Healthcare until her retirement in 2002. Starr cared for and was a foster mother for many children over the years. She was predeceased by her parents Ernest (Swede) Kent and Elsie (Jo) Rinard Kent; Sisters: Dawn Van Hamlin, Kay Male, Brothers: Roger Kent, Donald, David, and Gerald Cyranoski, Sisters-in-Law: Nora DeLongpre and Leatrice Freiberg; Brothers-in-Law: Eugene, Richard, and James Freiberg; Grandsons: Shawn Derevage, Calen Page, and Great Grand-Daughter Lakota Freiberg. Left to mourn is her husband of 64 years, Thomas Freiberg, Sr. Children: Brian (Dena) Freiberg, Thomas Jr. (Wendy) Freiberg, Susan Thomas, Dr. Barbara (Warren) Wright, Scott (Elizabeth) Freiberg, and Jennifer (James) Page. She also leaves her dearly loved grandchildren and great grandchildren, brother Darcy Kent (Audrey), sisters-in-law Eileen Kent, Sue Cyranoski, Marilyn Myers, and Mary Jane Mitchell, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was especially fond of the Mekaru children Elizabeth, Timothy, and Steven who she loved as her own and were very close to her heart.
The family will greet family and friends on Thursday, June 3, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Friday, June 4, 10:00 am -11:00 am. The memorial service will be held Friday, June 4 at 11:00 a.m. with a luncheon to follow. All services will be held at Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home, 13985 Northland Drive, Big Rapids. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan or The Kawasaki Disease Foundation.
