Obituary

Spencer DuWayne Burr, age 88 of Reed City, passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at his son DuWaynes home from Metastatic Melanoma. In hospice care for two months prior to his death, Spence died peacefully in his sleep. Born February 27, 1929, in Detroit, he was the son of the late Ernie Burr and Rev. Viola (Stevens) Rehkopf. Spencer married Laura Fredrick on October 10, 1955 at the Big Rapids Hospital and together they raised their family in the Paris and Reed City area. He is survived by three children, DuWayne (Carol) Burr of Hersey, Clifton Burr of Roger Heights, and Christine (Melvin) Cooley of Big Rapids; two sisters, Saralee (John Kelly) Rehkopf of Reed City and Blanche (ne Rehkopf) and her husband LaVail Erickson of Hersey; one brother, Roger Rehkopf of Reed City; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Spence was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Laura in January 2016; brothers, Robert and Arthur Burr, and Glen Rehkopf; sisters, Alice (ne Burr) Tetsloff and Phyllis (ne Rehkopf) Mund; step-son, Perry Gray; and step-father, William Rehkopf. He was a generous and caring individual who touched the lives of all who knew him. Spence is long known for his gift to carry on a conversation and his sense of humor. He very much enjoyed sharing his truck driving stories and experiences to anyone with a listening ear. Spences interests were: mechanics, fishing, coin and knife collecting, and his love of animals. As the family states, Spence was born with a socket in his mouth. He liked tinkering and fixing cars and engines. Spence worked the oil rigs for seven years before taking to the road as a truck driver. He owned and operated his own trucking company while continuing employed with other various companies. Spence retired from trucking at the age of 62. Wanting to stay busy, he worked for Elmers Concrete until he was 74. Spence was loved and will be greatly missed. A special thank you to Spectrum Health Hospice for their loving care and support. Per Spences wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no public services. Memorial contributions may be made in Spences name to Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center or Spectrum Health Hospice. Envelopes are available at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids.
