Shirley M. Kerns, age 75 of Big Rapids formerly of Chippewa Lake, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at her home. She was born in Big Rapids on April 24, 1948, the daughter of Allen and Freda (Bowers) Parker. Shirley was a graduate from Big Rapids High School. She was a pen pal to Carl E. Kerns, a soldier during the Vietnam War, and ended up marrying him on February 18, 1967 in Big Rapids; together they raised their family and made their home in Chippewa Lake. Shirley moved back to Big Rapids after Carl passed in 2013. She attended Third Avenue United Methodist Church in Big Rapids, where she was baptized. Shirley had a green thumb and enjoyed her employment caring for flowers at St. Ives Golf Course. She liked going for rides on the pontoon and quad, fishing, and adventuring. Shirley was known as the queen of QVC to her loving family. She is survived by three children, Patricia (Steven) Chapman of Chippewa Lake, Laurie (Dennis) Randall of Remus, and Carl (Debra) Kerns of Chippewa Lake; her companion, Charlie Howe of Rodney; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, John (Wanda) Parker, Bob (Mary) Parker, and Donny (Timmer) Parker, all of Stanwood; sisters-in-law, Ruth Parker of Rogers Heights and Mona Parker of Tubbs Lake; her special group of friends "The Golden Girls"; and several nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl E. Kerns, brothers Allen and Frank Parker, and sister Reta (Fred) Moore. Funeral Services will take place 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 28, 2023 at Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the funeral on Saturday at the Funeral Home. Shirley will be laid to rest 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 30, 2023 at Chippewa Lake Cemetery.
