Obituary

Ruth N. Woolworth, age 86 of Coral, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2022. She was born in Big Rapids on June 25, 1935, the daughter of the late Edgar and Agnes (Polance) Fredenburg. Ruth was a 1954 graduate of Big Rapids High School. She married Elmer Woolworth on October 2, 1954 and together they raised their family on the farm in Howard City. They attended Brockway Wesleyan Church in Morley before becoming a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Coral. Ruth was actively involved in the church; she ran the nursery, helped with luncheons and the Mother-Daughter Banquets, and taught Sunday School. Ruth was a member of the Howard City VFW Auxiliary, where she and Elmer volunteered working many fish fries. Ruth owned and operated Woolworths Daycare for 50 years. During this time, she and Elmer fostered 141 children and adopted seven of them. Ruth was known as the "boss of the house" and ran a tight ship. She had many talents including, growing a vegetable garden, canning her harvest, and sewing. She collected cows as she enjoyed their presence on the farm. In her later years, Ruth and Elmer looked forward to doing puzzles and playing Yahtzee, Racko, and Uno. Ruth is survived by four children, Christine (David) Mondrella, Charles Woolworth, Jill Childs, and David James Woolworth; five grandchildren, Allen (Carissa), Alicia (Shawn), Makayla, Madison, and Bianca; seven great-grandchildren; special nephew, Verle Beeman; brother, Joe Fredenburg; sister, Lois (Dewey) VanderBrook; sister-in-law, Gladys Fredenburg; many nieces, nephews, and Elmers brothers, sisters, and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer Woolworth, two sons David Darel and Tony Woolworth, grandson Tyler Mondrella, son-in-law David Childs, two brothers, Ed (Bev) Fredenburg and John Fredenburg, three sisters, Marguerite (Bernard) Beeman, Alice (Gilbert) Fisher, and Frances Beeman, sister-in-law, Sandy Fredenburg. Funeral Services will take place 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2022 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Coral with Pastor Chris Kaufield officiating. The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday, March 3rd at Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. Ruth will be laid to rest at Altona Cemetery in the Spring.
