Ruth M. Tyson, age 87 of Big Rapids, passed away Friday, February 20, 2015 at her home with her family by her side. She was born April 28, 1927 in Chicago, the daughter of Alfred and Adrian (Donheur) Bergmann. Ruth graduated from Saint Cyril Catholic High School in 1943 and met James Tyson while he was studying at the University of Chicago Medical School. In 1946 Ruth married James while he was stationed in San Diego with the United States Navy. They later moved to Big Rapids where they raised their family. Ruth was very active in her community; she liked working and volunteering to keep herself busy. Throughout her working life she expressed her talents at various jobs and she was also a longtime volunteer at the Mecosta County Medical Center Gift Shop. Ruth attended the Big Rapids First Baptist Church where she enjoyed going to the Ladies Sunday School. She is survived by four children, Anita Cotten of Memphis, TN, David (Mary) Tyson of Newaygo, Robert Tyson of Hersey and Daniel Tyson of Memphis, TN; one granddaughter, Melanie Rickman; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. James Tyson on April 6, 1977; and two brothers, David and Louis Bergmann. A funeral service will take place 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Bruce Peterson and Pastor Dave Westover officiating. The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 23rd and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. (noon) at the funeral home.
