Obituary

Russell O. Reams, age 70 of Big Rapids, a popular local artist passed away Monday, November 2, 2009 at his home. He was born August 30, 1939 in Manila, Arkansas to Orville and Flora (Hood) Reams. As a young man Russell taught himself to solder and weld. He crafted sculptures from scraps of metal he collected from garbage dumps, automotive repair shops and yard sales. Russ moved to the Big Rapids in 1968 from Howell. He graduated from Ferris State University with an Associate Degree in tool and die design. Russ' real venture into metal work didn't begin until after he graduated. He got a job as a draftsman for Tubelite Inc. in Reed City. His bosses there allowed him to take home all the scrap pieces of aluminum he wanted. Russ was well known for his work on display at Art-works. He spent countless hours at Art-works as a volunteer doing whatever needed to be done. He was described as a quiet, humble artist, and always critical of his own work. Russell retired in 1998 from Michigan Gas Company in Big Rapids after many years of service. Above all, the most important things in his life were his children and grandchildren. Russ was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by this three sons, Randy (Bit) of Florida, Curt (Linda) of Grand Rapids, and Sean (Julie) of Big Rapids.; six grandchildren, Randi, Kayla, Zac, Justin, Korinne, Tyler; two sisters, Lila Brayton and Jeannie Reams both of Howell; two brothers, James of Brighton and Jerry of Pickney ; several nieces and nephews; and the mother of his sons, Dawn Reams of Big Rapids. A private celebration of Russell's life will take place at a later date for family and close friends. Memorial contributions can be made to the family and they will go towards a local art program. Contributions may be dropped off at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids where arrangements were entrusted.
