Roy E. Garner, age 89 of Big Rapids, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009 at his home. He was born July 7, 1919 to Joseph and Margaret (Larkin) Garner in Big Rapids. Roy served in the C.C.C. in Paradise, Michigan. He was inducted into the United States Army serving during World War II in the European Theater where he was awarded 4 bronze Stars. Following his honorable discharge, Roy returned to Big Rapids and began his career with the City of Big Rapids Fire Department. Roy retired in 1975 after 27 years of service with the department. He was a life member of Eagles aerie #2535 of Big Rapids. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Anna Mae Garner of Big Rapids; 4 children, Betty Ann Garner of Glendale, CA, Jerry (Conda) Garner of Big Rapids, Jack (Lynn) Garner of Zephyrhills, FL, Joe (Kathy) Garner of Big Rapids; 6 Grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 4 step-children, Pat (Larry) Willett of Grand Rapids, Mike (Char) Larsen of Big Rapids, Rex A. Larsen of White Cloud, Christine K. Miller of Big Rapids; several step-grandchildren; a sister, Linda Kimmell of Grand Rapids and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Roy was preceded in death by wife, Eileen in 1976, 3 brothers, Harold, Clyde and Gordon Garner; 2 sisters, Gladys Tyner and Lula Outman; and a step-son, Richard D. Larsen. A memorial service will take place 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 3, 2009 at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with William Routley officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of American Legion Post #98 Firing Squad of Big Rapids. Memorial contributions in Roy's name may be made to Hospice of Michigan.
