Robert (Bob) Owen Nelson, 74, of Hersey, Michigan, passed away at his home on February 14, 2026. He was born on January 29, 1952, in Parchment, Michigan, to Harold and Phyllis (Snow) Nelson.

A man whose life’s work was to help others, Bob was a loyal friend who made those around him feel fortunate to have shared conversations, meals, campfires, and nature’s wonders in his company. He could think of a song to match any conversation and found beauty in all living creatures. Nearly every sentence was punctuated by his familiar light chuckle, and he was quick with a sincere compliment.

From backpacking across the Continental Divide in Montana to a life-changing journey through Alaska’s Brooks Range by foot and canoe, Bob cherished time in the wild with friends. He explored Isle Royale and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, remote stretches of Ontario, Maine, New Hampshire, and the Adirondacks in New York. Evenings spent with friends beside a campfire, quoting movie lines and sharing stories, were among his greatest joys.

When he wasn’t outdoors, Bob relished music, a good book or movie, a fine cigar with friends, and, above all, a hearty laugh. He was a deeply valued employee at Big Rapids Hospital and will be missed by many.

Robert is survived by his sisters, Carol Boggs, Susan (Chad) Carpenter, and Linda (Terry) Gage; and by longtime friends Harold Lake, Kerry Fay, Bob Joyce, Scott Wilmoth, Ken Appleman, and David and Chris Willard. He was preceded in death by his parents.
