Robert "Chief" F. McQuaid age 60 of Barryton, passed from this life unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, August 14, 2010. He was born on September 18, 1949 in Saginaw, MI to Robert H. and Margaret (Heckman) McQuaid. Robert was a former volunteer fireman for several fire departments including the Tribal Fire Dept. in Mt. Pleasant and the Shepherd Fire Dept. He was also a Boy Scout leader in Mt. Pleasant and Shepherd and helped serve food at the Isabella Co. Soup Kitchen. Robert was a proud member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and had a degree in forestry. He moved to Barryton about 10 years ago and enjoyed socializing, riding his quad, hunting and fishing when he was able and the chance to put a smile on any ones face. He was a big guy with a big heart. Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Susan "Sue" of Barryton, children; Robert of Mt. Pleasant and Jessica (David) McNeill of Barryton, one stepdaughter; Genia (Nick) Vinton of Rockford, 8 grandchildren, half sister; Betty Brewer of Bridgeport and many nieces, nephews and close friends. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his biological father Frederick Alexander of Marquette; two stepbrothers, Henry McQuaid and Leonard McQuaid; a half brother David McQuaid; two half sisters, Alta Gary and Rose Brewer and his stepsister Dorothy Zimmerman. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton with the family greeting friends one hour prior from 1PM to 2PM. Burial will follow at Strong Cemetery. Memorial donations in Robert's name can be made to Boy Scout Troop #120 of Barryton or to the Fire Dept. of your choice.
