Ricky (Ric) Underhile, PhD, passed away quietly at the age of 61 at his home in Canadian Lakes, Michigan, on February 27, 2025. He was surrounded by his loving husband, friends, family, and his beloved dogs and cat. Ric's last moments were marked by peace, the love of those closest to him, and the natural beauty of central northern Michigan that he so cherished.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, and raised in southern Illinois, Ric developed a deep love for music, reading, and learning from a young age. Growing up in a rural household, surrounded by the arts, he discovered the joys of Saturday night sports and Sunday school services, which shaped his warm, passionate, and thoughtful character. His academic journey took him through a bachelor's degree in Piano Performance and a Master's degree in Counseling from Wayne State University, followed by a Doctorate in Health Education from Southern Illinois University.

Ric's professional career spanned higher education, consulting, and leadership in the arts. He was a long-time advocate for the transformative power of education and played a key role in establishing an endowed scholarship at Grand Rapids Community College, making education more accessible to countless students. His work as the executive director of Artworks in Big Rapids, Michigan, was one of his proudest achievements, where he devoted himself to supporting the arts and fostering creativity in his community.

Ric lived his life with an infectious love for teaching, learning, and sharing stories, often with a mischievous smile and a good prank. His ability to connect with others and spread joy through the arts was one of his defining qualities. A lover of both education and the arts, Ric was always ready to inspire others with his knowledge, humor, and kindness.

In addition to his academic and professional accomplishments, Ric found immense joy in his personal life. He shared a deep love with his husband of 32 years, and his home was filled with warmth, laughter, and companionship. He will be remembered not only for his intellectual and artistic contributions but also for the genuine relationships he cultivated with those around him.

Ric's legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched and the vibrant, creative spirit he brought to all he did. May he rest in peace, knowing he leaves behind a world enriched by his passion, love, and devotion to the arts and education.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Artworks in Big Rapids, MI, in honor of Ric's lifelong commitment to the arts and education. A celebration of Ric's life will be held later in the Spring.
