Richard T. Treharne, age 97 of Canadian Lakes, went to Heaven on Sunday, June 23, 2024.
He was born November 30, 1926 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania the son of Thomas and Edith (Hellberg) Treharne. He left Punxsutawney High School (where he is honored in the Hall of Fame) early to play football at Michigan State College (now known as Michigan State University). After playing football and baseball for MSU, he enlisted in the United States Navy, served honorably, and returned to MSU to graduate. He went on to work as an accountant for General Motors where he had a long and successful career. Dick (aka Ripper) eloped with the love of his life, Joanie Taylor, on October 17, 1953 in Angola, Indiana. In lieu of a reception, the couple attended a MSU football game that afternoon.
Dick and Joanie were married for over 60 years. Their early years began in Ohio, then moved to Michigan and enjoyed a wonderful retirement at Canadian Lakes where his wife was affectionately known as the Cookie Lady. The friends they made, the parties they hosted and the martinis he enjoyed were all a reflection of his joyful life.
Richard shared life and love with his five children; Jim (Patsy) Treharne of Chantilly, VA, Barbie (Warren Mann) Treharne of Stafford, VA, Claudia (Joe) Hillstrom of Springhill, TN, Margie (Craig Senkowski) Treharne of Hartland, MI, Rich (Paula Smith) Treharne of Livonia, MI; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; several cherished nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his beloved Joanie on November 12, 2013, his two sisters, Marylou Pascuzzo and Connie Thomas.
Richard truly lived a life of love. He was patriotic, and a faithful Spartan fan. He knew how to enjoy life and if you met him, you became a sincere friend forever. He had a love for all sports, whether he participated or cheered on his children and grandchildren. He had a quick wit and a great sense of humor. Dick was the proudest Grandfather; he took great pride in being intimately involved in each of their lives. He was truly the kindest man ever and gracious to all even until his last breath. To know him was to love him.
