Obituary

Richard P. Smith Sr., age 88 of Mecosta, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2018 in Grand Rapids. He was born November 3, 1929 in Grand Rapids, the son of William and Clara (Duley) Smith. He married Norma Tulip and they made their home and raised their family in Grand Rapids before moving to Mecosta in 1995. Richard was employed by Grand Rapids Scale and retired after 30 years of service.

Richard was actively involved with the Mecosta Rod and Gun Club and was eager to lend a helping hand at Chapel of the Lakes Lutheran Church.

Richard is survived by his wife of 70 years, Norma Smith of Mecosta; three children, Linda (John) Green, Richard (Debra) Smith Jr. and Carole (Carlos) Ortega; six grandchildren, Heather Holland, Richard (Amanda Mieras) Smith, Rudy Ortega, Monica Ortega, Jessica (Nate) Szelle and Tammy Green; nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and many extended family and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents William and Clara Smith.

Memorial contributions may be made in Richard's name to Chapel of the Lakes Lutheran Church or the Mecosta Rod and Gun Club where he was a member.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Chapel of the Lakes, 9407 90th Ave., Mecosta. The family will greet relatives and friends at the church one hour prior from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 26th with the family greeting relatives and friends at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids.
