Obituary

Richard (Dick) Charles Manor, 81, of Big Rapids, passed Monday, September 1, 2008 at Metron Health Care of Big Rapids. He was born June 21, 1927, in Detroit, the son of Lawrence and Mary (Gagnon) Manor. Following his education, he entered the Army where he served for 15 months in the Philippines. He received an honorable discharge. He attended the Kerpel School of Dental Laboratory Technology at Philadelphia, PA. After working many years as a dental technician, Mr. Manor achieved a life-long goal to teach at the postsecondary level. Dick joined the faculty at Ferris State University starting the Dental Technology program in 1965. Professor Manor earned his bachelor and master degrees at FSU and CMU respectfully. In 1976, Dick applied for and received a sabbatical leave to study Maxillofacial Prosthetics at New York University. He also earned a scholarship sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Health, to support his studies. In March of 1978, Mr. Manor accepted a faculty position in the Prosthetic Department at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Mr. Manor was an active volunteer. He served as a chairman for Mecosta County March of Dimes and as a chairman for the National Foundation. Additionally, he was an active Elks member and served as an Exalted Ruler in 1973-74. He was active in the Knights of Columbus while living in Arlington, MA. He is survived by his wife, Anna Manor of Big Rapids and his children, Debra (Gary) Cox of Big Rapids, Richard Jr., of Detroit, Mark (Heather) of Harrison Twp, Thomas (Mary) of Northborough, MA, and Mary Grace (Paul) Flynn of Rockford; ten grandchildren, Christopher, Robin, Melanie, Jennifer, Michael, James, Alex, Katherine, Ashley, Mark Jr.; one great granddaughter, Marissa. A brother, Lawrence (Kathleen) of Grosse Point Woods, a sister, Mary Adelaide Grobbel of Fair Haven, MI, a sister-in-law, Justine Manor of St. Claire Shores and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Dick's life will take place 12:00 p.m. (noon) Thursday, September 4th at St. Paul Catholic Parish in Big Rapids with Father Joe Fix officiating the Mass. The family will greet friends on Wednesday, (today) from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at St. Paul Campus Parish and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
