Obituary

Richard H. Karsten, 85 of Sears, passed into glory on Monday, August 8, 2016 in Grand Rapids. He was born on January 27, 1931 in Rogers City, MI to Herman and Grace (Noffze) Karsten. Dick graduated from Rogers City High School in 1947 and went on to get a Bachelors degree in Forestry from Michigan Tech. While in college he entered into the ROTC and later enlisted into the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged after serving during the Korean Conflict. On July 11, 1959 he married Mary M. Vanhala in Southfield and they made their home in Berkley, MI where he was a bank manager throughout the Detroit area and retired to his current home on Merrill Lake in 1997. Richard was an active member of the Barryton Lions Club, Chapel of the Lakes Lutheran Church and Gods Helping Hands in Remus. He also loved to fish. Richard leaves behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary; three sons, Eric (Patricia) of Brighton, Hans (Stephanie) of Midland and Peter (Tina) of Clarkston; eight grandchildren, Ashley, Beth, Lauren, Nathan, Bridget, Bryce, Mackenzie and Lucas; one great-granddaughter Ella, and another one on the way; two sisters, Anita Augsburger and Carleen (Ken) Buchler; and many extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Paul, Edmund and Donald. A celebration of Richards life and military honors will take place at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 13, 2016 at Chapel of the Lakes Lutheran Church (9407 90th Ave., Mecosta, MI). Memorial donations in Richards name can be made to Gods Helping Hands, Juvenile Diabetes Association or Chapel of the Lakes. Envelopes are available at the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton.
