Richard D. Thompson, age 79 of Canadian Lakes, passed away Monday, February 25, 2013 at the Mecosta County Medical Center in Big Rapids. He was born on October 7, 1933 in Detroit, the son of Joseph and Harriet (Terry) Thompson. He married Elizabeth Thorne on January 12, 1957 in Detroit and together they raised their family in Redford. Richard was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1958. He was employed by Standard Register and retired as a manager in 1997. Following his retirement they moved to Canadian Lakes. Richard had a passion for cooking and movies and enjoyed fishing and watching World War II documentaries. He loved his family and he will be missed by all. Richard is survived by his four children, Cathy (Peter) Esbrook of South Lyon, Cindy (Tony) Charnawskas of Westland, Rick (Carrie) Thompson of Redford and Tracey (Charlie) Wilson of Sand Lake; 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dolores Stevens of Westland; 6 nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Thompson on January 29, 2012; an infant son, Steven; a granddaughter, Michaela; a brother-in-law, Gar Stevens; and his parents. There are no services planned at this time. Memorial contributions in Richard's name may be made to Great Lakes Caring Hospice.
