IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rex L.
Hampel
July 25, 1952 – September 29, 2025
Rex Leland Hampel, of Rodney, went to be with his Lord on September 29, 2025 at the age of 73 surrounded by his family. He was born on July 25, 1952 to Bruce and Evelyn (Maguire) Hampel in Rodney, where he lived his whole life.
After his graduation from Chippewa Hills High School in 1970, Rex earned two associates degree from the formerly-known Ferris State College.
On May 4, 1974, in Eaton Rapids, Rex married the love of his life, Barbara Bailey.
He learned the value of a strong work ethic at a young age during his time working with his father on the farm. They worked together to grow hay, and raise horses and cattle.
Known for his hard working spirit, Rex held positions at multiple companies throughout his lifetime, working at Capen Electric Television Repair, Michigan Bell Telephone, and TransCanada Pipeline.
In his earlier years Rex enjoyed playing softball in the Big Rapids City Recreation leagues. He also founded and organized Chippewa Lake Little League baseball, where he coached his sons during that time. Rex was a mentor to Justin and Aaron during their 4-H years in various animal projects and was always there to help at the Fairgrounds during horse shows and other Fair activities. When he wasn't working, Rex enjoyed hunting, nurturing animals, skiing, wakeboarding, and tinkering on the farm. The best part of Rex's life was the presence of his beloved family. He loved his grandchildren dearly and lit up whenever they were around. He was also a faithful member of the Chippewa Lake Community Church.
Rex is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara; their two children: Justin (Amanda) Hampel and Aaron (Jamie) Hampel; grandchildren: Hayven, Westyn, Berkley, and Landrey; two sisters: Kay and Kathy; five nieces; including Lisa Manno, whom he loved and cared for as his own daughter.
He is preceded in death by both parents.
