Phyllis E. Stokely, age 87, passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at her home in Big Rapids. She was born August 24, 1934 in Edmore, the daughter of Phillip and Dorothy (Sharp) Miles. Phyllis started her working life at Welchs Meat Market; she then worked for Wolverine Glove Factory before transitioning to Wright Bakery for many years. Phyllis then worked several years at Kroger as a union steward. She retired from Carters Grocery in the early 2000s after working there for many years. Phyllis loved to be in the kitchen. She enjoyed canning, baking and cooking for the family. Phyllis would make delicious peanut butter fudge every year for Christmas as a special treat everyone could enjoy. Her biggest passion in life was being outdoors. She enjoyed fishing with her family and tending to her flower garden. Phyllis was an expert landscaper, always keeping her flowers, trees, and bushes in pristine condition so much so that people would stop and take pictures. She will be missed by many. She is survived by her children, Val Stokely Jr. of Big Rapids, Jeanne (Jim) Giroux of Grand Rapids, Debra Crandall of Big Rapids, Pete Stokely of Tustin; grandchildren, Kurt and Walter Crandall, Adam Giroux, Ashley Kardos, Alexis and Allison Stokely, Willow Miller; great-grandchildren, Aja Crandall, Isla and Callium Giroux, Gavin and Tatum Kardos; siblings, Alice (Bud) Griffin, Donna Lewis, Carolyn Bigler, Tom (Pat) Miles; sisters-in-law, Marion Ashley and Ruthann VanWestern; many nieces and nephews. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Val Stokely Sr.; parents; siblings, Wayne, Leon, and Steve Miles, Doris Flowers, Shirley Hanner and Joyce Phillips.
