Obituary

Philip W. Russell, age 66 of Stanwood, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Mecosta County Medical Center. He was born February 22, 1945 in Muskegon, the son of William and Ercella (Hull) Russell. Phil graduated from Morley-Stanwood High School in 1963. After graduation he was drafted by the United States Army serving 18 months in Vietnam. Phil was honorably discharged and started his farming career, which he did most of his life. He then drove the milk truck for Ellison Trucking for ten years until his health declined. Phil would pick up milk for the Amish community and was affectionately known as the "Candy Man" to the Amish children. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Sally (Vredenburg) Russell of Stanwood; a "daughter" Dawn Taylor of Stanwood; 2 brothers Robert McVicker of Muskegon and Bill (Carol) McVicker of Pentwater; a sister Mary Carson of Owosso; mother-in-law, Dorothy Vredenburg of Stanwood; many nieces, nephews and his dog, Brandy. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, his biological mother, Marjorie McVicker, 5 brothers and sisters. Those wishing to share memories and fellowship may do so at a luncheon that has been arranged at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2011 at the Stanwood Eagles. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Phil's name may be made to the Mecosta County Commission on Aging Transportation or the donor's choice of charity. Envelopes may be picked up at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. The family would like to thank Mecosta County Medical Center, Fresenius Medical Care, Mecosta County Commission on Aging Transportation and Pride Carpet Cleaning.
