Obituary

Patrick J. Gillespie, age 72, of Mecosta passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born May 28, 1938 in New York, New York, to Patrick J. and Mary (Mooney) Gillespie. Patrick graduated from Westchester Community College in 1960 with an Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering. On October 10, 1964 he married Diane M. O'Conner and they made their home in Monsey, NY where they raised their family and he was employed with the NYPD. Following 20 years of service with the NYPD he retired and in 1979 they moved to Mecosta, MI. He worked as the head of security for the Canadian Lakes Association for 10 years before joining the Mecosta County Sheriff's Dept. where he retired from. Patrick was a parishioner of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Remus where he served as an usher and member of the Knights of Columbus. He had a sense of humor that would not quit, was understanding and diplomatic. Patrick enjoyed fishing, animals and was a good handyman. Patrick is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Diane who will continue to treasure the life of fun and laughter they created; beloved son, Patrick (Kris) Gillespie and their children, Nicholas and Maddie of Missouri City, TX, beloved daughter, Kathleen Gillespie (Thompson) and her daughter Katelin of Saranac; two brothers, Bernard (Margaret) of Valley Stream, New York and Frank (Ada) of Florida, many nieces, nephews and friends here and in Ireland. Patrick was preceded in death by his parents Patrick and Mary. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Remus with visitation one hour prior to funeral services. Father Michael Burt will be officiating. Interment will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, July 19th at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with a scripture service being held at 6:00 PM concluding with a time of sharing. Memorial donations in Patrick's name can be made to St. Michael's Catholic School.
