Obituary

Patricia “Pat” Alice Reed passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, Thursday evening, March 12, 2026, at the age of 74.

The words kind, loving and accepting are an understatement when describing Pat. She was always there to take a call, or stop to chat, and talk to you like an old friend, regardless of how long it’d been since you last spoke to her.

Pat always admitted that she was not the most outgoing person, but whenever there was a gathering, she’d be off to the side holding court with a group of people, regardless if she knew them or not. She would ask how your day was, and how life was going for you. A humble soul, Pat never led with her day, but if you asked how she was doing, be ready, you were in for the long haul.

She would always have advice, even if you weren’t exactly asking for it. Pat would harken to back to her own experience to help steer you in the right direction. Even if you made a mistake, Pat, one of the most understanding people you’d ever meet, would be there to comfort you, and help you get back on your feet.

Born and raised in West Michigan, a graduate of Godwin Heights and Grand Valley State University, Pat was one of the biggest sports fans you’ll find. Whether it be her local favorites – the Wolverines, the Tigers, the Red Wings, the Pistons or Lions – or whatever star athlete was on that night, she’d always be watching. She’d somehow always be able to give better analysis than the pundits on television.

Pat married her late husband, Cliff, in May 1981. Along with being longtime season-ticket holders of the Grand Rapids Griffins, the two were big fans of boating and being by the water. They bought property in Stanwood, just south of Big Rapids, right along the Muskegon River. “Up North” became a destination for friends and family. The couple opened their door and fired up the boat for their loved ones. At days end, Pat would be there at the dinner table, asking how the water was, telling her stories of her own experience on the river.

Few people like Pat have come and gone from this Earth. Someone who experienced so much, but remained as grounded. She was always there for the big events, supporting her loved ones in their endeavors. Weddings, sporting events, celebrations, she would do what she could to make sure you felt seen, and important. She’d tell you how great it was to see you, even if it was just for a few minutes, give you a pat on the back (full pun intended), maybe slip you a $10 bill, and send you on your way. That’s just who Pat was, and how we’ll always remember her.

Pat will be lovingly remembered by her siblings, Catherine Tassell and Mike Goretzka; nephews, Jonathan (Colleen) and James (Kris); great-nieces and nephews, Tyler (Kelly), Connie, Jacob, Alex (Bethany), Brianna, Avery, Megan, and Daniel; great-great-nephew, Felix; step-children, Alice (Daniel) Rhodes and Mont (Nina) Reed; grandchildren: Daniel (Cynthia), London, Nora (Zac), and Brickner; and great-great-grandchildren: Duke, Elle, Joshua (Jackie), Kashton, Kohen, Knox, Klaire, and Brad (Lindsey).

Pat was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cliff Reed; her parents; her sister, Sylvia (Al) Bristol; and her brother-in-law, Alfred (Margaret) Reed.
