Pastor Harold Edward "Ed" Barrett, age 82 of Grand Rapids formerly of Stanwood, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Spectrum Health Continuing Care in Grand Rapids. He was born November 13, 1928 in Shelbyville the son of William and Julia (Morris) Barrett. Upon graduation Ed went to school in New York and became an ordained minister. On June 30, 1951 he married Geraldine A. Blakeslee in Grand Rapids. Ed was employed as a school bus driver for the Morley Stanwood, Zeeland and Ravenna School systems for 20 years. He was passionate about preaching and went back to school for his doctorate at the age of 50. For 43 years Ed was a pastor in the Free Methodist Church. With his family by his side he pastored in Marion, Rose Lake, Ravenna, Stanwood, Zeeland and Sheridan. When Ed was able he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Geraldine of Grand Rapids; daughter, Darlene (Tim) Scott of Bridgeport, OH; son, Larry (Linda) Barrett of Grand Rapids, MI; grandson Craig (Kristen) Barrett and their son Harrison; step-granddaughter Kelly (Jason) Hellenthal and their daughters Brinna and Brooklynn; brother, Albert "Dean" Barrett of Grand Rapids; 3 sisters, Lela Seiwell of Byron Center, Virginia Blakeslee of Muskegon and Laura (Ray) Osborne of Middleville and several nieces and nephews. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Vivian Shackley; 4 brothers, Morris, Merrill, Lloyd and Elton. The family will greet friends on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at the Stanwood Free Methodist Church (7486 Stanwood Dr.) with Pastor Ron White officiating. Interment will be at Stanwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Stanwood Free Methodist Church.
