Nellie Jean Swarthout, 91, of Rodney, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

She was born on June 29, 1933, in Barnardsville, North Carolina, the daughter of Elicie and Timer (Davis) Burleson. On June 14, 1952, Nellie was united in marriage to Arvin Swarthout, who preceded her in death in 2014.

Nellie had a gentle, nurturing spirit and spent her life helping and caring for others. She especially loved working with seniors, often volunteering her time at the local Senior Center, where she formed many lasting friendships. A proud member of the Red Hat Society, Nellie embraced a vibrant social life, full of laughter and community.

She was a dedicated member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Big Rapids and enjoyed living on the lake—her peaceful haven—where she made countless cherished memories with family and friends.

She is survived by her loving daughters: Theresa (Roger) Avink and Nancy McReynolds; son-in-law: Dwayne Jackson; grandchildren: Michael (Becki) Vanderlugt, Brian (Amy) Vanderlugt, Jeanne (Jonathan) Kanaday, Andy (Mike Barr) Lam, Lisa Lam, Amanda (Chris) Glover, Brad (Samantha) Swarthout, Shane McReynolds, Thomas Diaz; as well as numerous great-grandchildren who brought her endless joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Arvin, her children Karen Lam, Dean Swarthout, and Gary Swarthout, son-in-law James Vanderlugt, and eight siblings.

Visitation will take place on Sunday, April 20, 2025, from 6:00–8:00 P.M. at Daggett Gilbert Funeral Homes, Big Rapids.
