Obituary

Nelda E. Metcalf, age 83 of Chippewa Lake, passed away on Monday, August 9, 2010 at her sons home in Mecosta. She was born on April 30, 1927 in Grant Twp., Hersey, Michigan to Cecil and Eleanor (Morse) Reed. Nelda graduated from Hersey High School in 1945. On March 14, 1952 she married Duane "Duke" Metcalf in Evart and together they made their home on his family's farm at Chippewa Lake where she enjoyed being a homemaker, quilting, reading, gardening and began a lifetime of community service. Nelda's work ethic, giving spirit and graciousness made her one of the pillars of the Chippewa Lake community. When she was able there weren't many events that didn't require her famous "Nelda Beans'. She was a former Red Hatter, member of the V.F.W. Post #2335 Auxiliary of Mecosta, Chippewa Lake Lions, Merry Circle, Birthday Club and Country Janes Home Extension. Nelda sat on the Chippewa Lake Community Buiding Board and was a trustee on the Chippewa Lake Twp. Board for numerous years. She had a deep faith and was a member of the Chippewa Lake Community Church for over 50 years. Nelda had a passion for taking care of her family and helping others that won't soon be forgotten. She is survived by her adoring family; Regina Reed-O'Rear of Evart, Steven (Jeanne) Metcalf of Mecosta, Connie (Steve) Wernette of Remus, Tammy (Metcalf) Dyer of Reed City and Scott (Catina) Metcalf of Mecosta; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Larry (Kay) Reed of Evart; one sister, Ila Colley of Big Rapids; 3 sisters-in-law, Laquita Armstrong of OK, Ann Reed of Reed City and Joan Reed of Reed City, many nieces and nephews and dear friends. Nelda was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter; two grandsons, Dennis Metcalf and Riley Schmidt; 3 brothers, Paul, Forrest and Harold "Ike" Reed and her husband Duke Metcalf in 2005. Funeral services will take place 2 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the Chippewa Lake Community Church with Pastor Steven Scott officiating. Interment will follow at Chippewa Lake Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton on Wednesday from 3PM to 5PM and 7PM to 9PM. Memorial donations in Nelda's name can be made to the Chippewa Lake Community Church for the building fund. Please share a memory or sign the guestbook.
