Neil D. Gilbert Sr., age 84 of Howard City, passed away Monday, January 14, 2013 in Big Rapids. He was born January 1, 1929 in Sand Lake the son of Darwin and Anna (Washer) Gilbert. Neil was honorably discharged from the United States Army. He married Naomia DeVries on March 17, 1950 in Cedar Springs where the couple made their home for over 30 years. Neil farmed and was employed at Rowe-A.M.I. in Grand Rapids for 32 years. Neil was an avid sportsman but he especially loved bowling; not only was he an accomplished league bowler, he also served as secretary for the Greater Grand Rapids Bowling Association for many years. Neil is survived by his wife, Naomia Gilbert of Howard City; three children, Neil Gilbert Jr. of Morley, Steve Gilbert of Howard City, Sue (David) Uibel of Mooresville, NC; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Frank (Frieda) Gilbert of Grant; sister-in-law, Winona DeRoos of Grand Rapids; brother-in-law, Raymond Fries of Sparta; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Roy and Harry Gilbert; four sisters, Edna Kramer, Ada Castle, Erma Castle and Geraldine Pratt; two daughters-in-law, Wendy Gilbert and Virginia Gilbert. Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Ensley Center Baptist Church, 7077 120th Street, Sand Lake, MI.
