Nancy
Horan
April 19, 1934 – February 27, 2026
Nancy Horan, 91, of Big Rapids, passed away on Friday, February 27, 2026.
She was born on April 19, 1934, in Big Rapids, the daughter of Jess and Leda (Smith) Vliet. A lifelong resident of Big Rapids, Nancy graduated from Big Rapids High School and was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Big Rapids, where she attended throughout her life.
Nancy was affectionately known as “Nan Nan” to all her nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and even great-great-nieces and nephews. She proudly wore that title and insisted that even their friends call her Nan Nan. It was a name that reflected the warmth, love, and joy she shared so freely.
She loved to read, travel, sew, and quilt. Nancy served as a 4-H sewing leader and was known for her creativity and craftsmanship. She enjoyed making a variety of handmade items to sell at craft shows, especially her beautiful quilts.
Throughout her working years, Nancy was employed by Michigan Bell, Ferris State College, and Schuberg Insurance Agency. She also proudly owned and operated the Ala Mode Restaurant, where she became well known for her cooking. She loved bringing people together and especially enjoyed organizing potlucks that were always filled with laughter and good food.
Nancy was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and was actively involved in their activities. Family meant everything to her, and she was especially proud of her son Marty and his service in the United States Navy.
She is survived by her son, Mike (Laura) Bishop; grandchildren, Ryan (Jennifer) Bishop and Krysten (Trey) Collins; and great-grandchild, Davis. As well as Audrey Horan, and Mark (Val) Horan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil; her son, Marty; her sister, Alice Jane; and her brother, Jess.
Nancy’s family feels incredibly blessed to have shared 91 wonderful years with her. They cherish the many memories, laughter, and good times that will forever remain in their hearts.
