Obituary

Mirl Marvin Spencer, age 89, of Mecosta, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. He was born on October 14, 1935, in Coldwater, Michigan, the son of Almon and Rosetta (Fields) Spencer. Mirl honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War as part of a tanker unit in the 23rd Infantry. After his military service, he returned home to work in his fathers well-drilling business in Barryton before moving to Lennon, where he began a career with General Motors as a Crane Operator. He retired from GM after many years of dedicated service. Mirl was united in marriage to the love of his life, Lois (Lucas), with whom he shared 47 wonderful years until her passing in 2018. In his retirement, he remained active in several organizations that were close to his heart. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners, where he volunteered to drive children in need to the Shriners Hospital in Chicago. He also delighted in participating in parades, driving the iconic Tin Lizzies. Additionally, Mirl was a dedicated member of the Mecosta VFW, where he honored and supported fellow veterans. Mirl is survived by his stepchildren: Richard Alday, Margaret (Marvin) Herman, and Patty Barry; grandchildren: Andy (Sarah) Herman, Lauren Herman, and Taylor Herman; great-grandchildren; Nora, Ethan, Rose, Ella and Dimitri, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lois, and siblings: Harold Spencer, Bill (Chin) Spencer, Milford (Lois) Spencer, Minnie (Fred) Russell and Fern (Warren) Platt. Cremation has taken place, and graveside services with military honors will be held at a later date at Britton Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Daggett Funeral Home, Barryton.
