Obituary

Mildred "Millie" Gillies, 85, of Big Rapids, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

She was born on September 8, 1939, in Alma, Michigan, the daughter of Albert and Mildred (McKinley) Peets. Millie graduated from Midland High School and went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Music from the University of Michigan, followed by a Master's Degree in Education from Central Michigan University.

Born into a family of educators, Millie was instilled with a deep respect for learning and a passion for education that shaped her life's journey. Her marriage took her around the world—living in Detroit, Somalia, Chelsea, Botswana, Swaziland, Dexter, and Manchester—before settling in Big Rapids in 1991. No matter where life led her, she brought her love of teaching and music with her, enriching communities along the way.

Music was Millie's lifelong passion. She sang in and directed numerous vocal groups, including Melody Makers in Canadian Lakes, Sweet Adelines in Reed City, and Voca Lyrica. She served as the music director at Immanuel Lutheran Church and worked as a church secretary at First United Methodist Church in Big Rapids.

Millie was also a proud member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and tutored writing at the Ferris State University Writing Center for many years. An accomplished author, she also published her own book—a testament to her lifelong commitment to learning and expression.

Though her achievements were many, Millie found her greatest joy in music and in helping others learn, grow, and find confidence in themselves.

She is survived by her children: Todd (Julie) Gillies and Tracy (Blake) Barrilleaux; and her grandchildren: Joseph, Megan, Alexander, Jade, and Kayla; along with numerous nieces and nephews, that she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents and her twin sister, Elizabeth Brown.
