Mildred Catherine (Abel) Weis age 86, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2007 in Big Rapids. She was born December 30, 1920 in Mecosta, MI, the daughter of Henry and Emma Abel. She graduated from Mecosta High School, Dickinson Secretarial School in Grand Rapids, and later attended Ferris State College. She worked in Grand Rapids until her marriage in 1942 to Gerald Weis, of Remus. Gerald was inducted into the Army, placed in the Medics, and stationed in Brownwood, Texas where they remained until the end of the war. Gerald and Mildred resided in Remus with their family for many years where Mildred was an active member of St. Michaels Catholic Church, Parish Council of Catholic Women, Pinochle Club, and Remus Sewing Group. In 1961, following her husbands career as Sheriff of Mecosta County, she moved to Big Rapids. She became an active member at St. Mary's Church. She belonged to the P.C.C.W., and the Martha's Sewing Group. For 12 years she was a 4-H leader, teaching young girls sewing, photography, and cooking, her members winning many state awards. She served on the board of 4-H Council for three years. She was a member of the Big Rapids Historical Society, the Big Rapids Garden Club, and the Attic Diggers Antique Club. She also loved to bowl, golf and bake. For 22 years she worked for the Mecosta County Sheriff Department, serving as deputy, matron, cook, darkroom technician, bookkeeper, and driver's license examiner. She also completed a Jail Specialist Program. Her kitchen was always open to police officers from local, state and out of state departments, as were the county commissioners. Mildred had a great love for her family, and was insistent that one should write down their memoirs, as she did. She loved her Savior and Church and the many friends she met along the way, and she always had a kind word about everyone. She was preceded in death in 1993, by her husband of 51 years, Gerald, and a sister Evelyn Bonnell. Surviving are one son; Gerald (Linnea) Weis Jr. of Big Rapids, three daughters; Doreen (Edwin) Scott of Brentwood, TN, Elizabeth Waiess of St. Johns, MI and Laura (Mark) Viel of Big Rapids, one Brother-in-law; Robert (Arlene) Weis of Canadian Lakes, Two sisters; Bernadine Flickinger of Portage, MI and Erma Dobbertein of Marshall, MI. Ten Grandchildren; Christine (ne'e Scott) Wyman, Brian and Andrew Scott, Geryl (ne'e Weis) Roshak, Carrie, Aaron and Anna Weis, Christian, Michael and Julia Veil, and Thirteen great grandchildren, 9 nieces and nephews and many cousins. Funeral Mass will take place 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2007 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Big Rapids with Father Lam T. Le officiating. The family will greet friends on Thursday at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Vigil service at 7:30 p.m. that evening. The family will also greet friends one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Interment will be at St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery in Remus at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday July 7th. Memorial contributions in Mildred's name may be made to the Michigan Sheriffs Association, Heartland Hospice, or the Stephens Ministries of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
