Mike Shaw, age 70 of Canadian Lakes, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, February 20, 2012 due to complications from Dementia with Lewy Bodies. He was born James Michael Shaw on January 22, 1942 in Gladwin; the son of Wilbur and Lorraine (Pike) Shaw. Mike was raised in Belding, MI and moved to Big Rapids in 1976 where he met Loreen. They were married in April of 1978, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Big Rapids, where they made their home and raised their family. While living in Big Rapids, Mike and Loreen owned and operated several businesses, including United Glass and Shaw's Building and Remodeling. Mike served as a Mecosta County Commissioner and on the Planning and Zoning Board, as well as on the committee to adopt the emergency number "911" . Following their retirement Mike and Loreen spent several years traveling throughout the United States; Mike especially had fond memories of his trip to Alaska. They wintered several years in Florida and always made good friends throughout their travels. Mike is survived by his wife, Loreen; a son, Mike (Linda) Shaw of NC; two granddaughters, Ellen and Rachel of NC; a step-son, Todd Dinneen and granddaughter, Jazmin of AZ; his brother Jack Shaw of Belding; brother-in-law, Phil (Luella) Musser of Big Rapids. Besides his parents Mike was preceded in death by a brother Jerry Shaw of Belding. A memorial service will take place 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3rd at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. The eulogy, thoughts and memories will be given by Mike's dear friend, the Honorable Ronald C. Nichols. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services beginning 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in Mike's name may be made to Hospice of Michigan or Chapel of the Lake Lutheran Church.
