Micheal D. Sims, age 57 of Big Rapids, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2008 after a courageous battle with ALS. He was born July 27, 1951 in Big Rapids the son of George and Arvilla (Mason) Sims. Mike graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1969 and earned a Bachelors of Science degree from Ferris State. On March 10, 1973 he married Judith A. Fredrick at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Big Rapids where they are members. For 10 years he was enlisted in the Big Rapids National Guard. He had been employed at MichCon, the City of Wyoming and most recently at Hydaker Wheatlake Co. in Reed City where he was the safety director. Mike was an avid bass fisherman, he enjoyed riding his Harley and playing basketball. Mike is survived by his loving wife Judi Sims of Big Rapids, Four children: George (Shanan) Sims of Hersey, Dean (Liedewey) Sims of Cedar Springs, Jade Sims of Lansing, Deanna (Eric) Sims-Cornell of Morley, Six grandchildren: Erica and Meghan Cornell, Logan, Dylan, Layke and MacGregor Sims, Five brothers: Robert, Russell, Ronald, James, Patrick, three sisters: Rose Terry, Laura LeRue, Susan Rademacher and several beloved nieces, nephews and friends. Cremation has taken place and a memorial mass has been scheduled for 3 p.m. December 11, 2008 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Lam T. Le officiating. A memorial wake will take place at the Eagle's Lodge at 18361 16 mile Rd. in Big Rapids immediately following. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Mike's name may be given to the ALS Foundation, Hospice of Michigan, or Saint Vincent DePaul.
